  1. That’s fabulous that you and your wife are both recording your personal histories. There are a number of books out now to help people do that, and some people even do it as a full-time job for others. If you haven’t seen Dan Curtis’s blog, check it out, that’s what he does for a living. He’s got tons of references to help, book suggestions, and so on. His blog is at http://dancurtis.ca/posts/

And what a wonderful memory of your childhood visit to Ireland! I am envious. It would be wonderful if you could take another trip over now, and see how much it’s changed, and how much is the same as you recall.

  2. Thanks for the link to Dan Curtis’s blog. Interesting.
Yes, I would like to go back to Mayo, However, I know that, sixty years on, it will be completely different. Might it be better to stay away and keep those happy memories intact?

  3. Lovely, lovely post. It amazes me how bright and vivid memories from those younger years can be. I certainly have some memories of my own. Sometimes they surface while I’m busily looking for the car keys I misplaced just a moment ago…

Your method of jotting down things as they come to you is highly recommended by William Zinsser, whose new book, “Writing About Your Life” is as much a joy to read as it is a handy tool. If you don’t know Zinsser’s work, I believe there are some excerpts from this book and another of his classics, “On Writing Well”, on the web.

One of the UK readers I sent the info about the petition grew up in Kent.

  4. Shoreacres, I can do the car keys thing too!
    Thanks for the book recommendation.
Apparently, of all the senses, smell is the one that is most vividly remembered over long periods. I didn’t know this until a couple of days ago when my wife told me after reading an article about it. Suddenly it all made sense. The distinctive smell of the fresh peat has long been my most vivid memory of Ballina and the one that has triggered all the other details outlined above.
